Truck Driver Totals Semi on I-80/94 Barrier Wall
GARY, IN- – On November 27, at approximately 4:30 p.m., a single vehicle crash closed all lanes of I-80/94 west bound at the 9 mile marker in the area of Grant Street. Crews were able to get one lane open shortly after the crash and 2 lanes open at 6:45 p.m. Preliminary investigation by Trooper Corey Adam shows that a 2007 Volvo semi truck/trailer, owned by BA Logistics of Michigan City, IN, was west bound on I-80/94 when a witness on scene stated that as the truck was traveling in the right lane, the semi went onto the right shoulder and then suddenly jerked back to the left. The overcorrecting caused the driver to lose control and the semi to roll onto its right side. The truck then slid across all lanes of westbound travel and collided with the concrete barrier wall on the south side of the westbound lanes. The semi-tractor plowed through the barrier wall and came to rest in the eastbound express lane. The express lane was closed during this incident and no vehicles were traveling in the express lane when the collision occurred. The trailer came to rest blocking all lanes of west bound travel. The driver, Khalil Abdelrahman, 49, of Indianapolis, Indiana, was transported by Gary EMS to Northlake Hospital in Gary with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was traveling from Hebron, Kentucky, to Chicago, Illinois. The trailer was loaded with 10,000 pounds of general freight. As a result of the crash, there was a large diesel and oil spill that also required clean up prior to the roadway being reopened.
As of 8:00 p.m., all lanes have been reopened except for the far left lane in order for the construction company to repair the concrete barrier wall for the eastbound express lane.
Vehicle removal was completed by Bert’s Towing and Double T Towing. The Indiana State Police Lowell District was also assisted by Gary Fire/EMS, Hoosier Helpers, Indiana State Highway Dept., Indiana State Police Toll Road District and the Lake Station Police Department.
Press release from Indiana State Police.
