Traffic Stop for Headlight Violation Leads to Arrest for Drugs and Multiple Felony Warrants

Shelby County, IN – A Shelbyville man is in jail after falsely identifying himself to a trooper during a traffic stop for an equipment violation. It was discovered the man was wanted on several warrants from two counties and he was allegedly in possession of marijuana.

Around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday evening, July 11th, Trooper Will Gannon pulled over a 2004 Chrysler for a headlight violation. While speaking with the female driver and the male passenger, Trooper Gannon could smell what he believed to be marijuana coming from inside the car. The driver presented a driver’s license but the passenger said he did not have ID and verbally gave the trooper his name and date of birth. Further investigation determined the information given by the male passenger was false. Through investigative techniques, Gannon was able to positively identify the male as 29 year old Dominique Reid of Shelbyville.

It was determined Reid was wanted on warrants in Shelby County for the following charges:

  • Theft of a Firearm
  • Maintaining a Common Nuisance
  • Possession of Marijuana

Reid also had active arrest warrants in Marion County for the following charges:

  • Battery Resulting in Bodily Injury

Domestic Battery

A search of Reid’s belongings allegedly revealed a jar containing marijuana and an unused syringe. In addition to the arrest warrants, Reid was booked into the Shelby County Jail on new charges. The following charges are merely accusations of a crime, formal charges will be determined by the Shelby County Prosecutor’s Office.

  • Possession of Marijuana
  • Possession of a Hypodermic Syringe
  • Refusal to Identify Self While Stopped for an Infraction

This case is an example of a trooper looking beyond a minor violation. Trooper Gannon’s attention to detail put a wanted fugitive in jail and remove drugs from the streets.
