Suspect arrested in 2016 Rensselaer Walnut St. Arson – Tue. Jun. 5
In July of 2016 the Rensselaer Fire Department responded to a fire in the 600 block of East Walnut. The business owner was out of town at the time and the fire resulted in a total loss of the building. Later that day, the police department received a call from a subject who advised of suspicious activity just prior to the fire. The witness stated they saw a subject inside the shop and she was able to give a physical description.
Detective Hughes met with Fire Investigators and the fire was determined to have been intentionally set. She was able to determine that Austin Kovach was the subject that was seen leaving the building prior to the fire. Detective Hughes interviewed Mr. Kovach, about his knowledge or involvement in the fire and he provided an alibi claiming he was not in the area. She was able to determine Mr. Kovach was not truthful during the interview.
Charges were requested on Mr. Kovach and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was located on June 4th 2018 and taken into custody on charges of Arson, Burglary and False Informing. Additional charges may be filed on others who hindered the investigation.
