Skeletal Remains Identified as Missing Auburn, IN. Man

DeKalb County, IN)-The Indiana State Police is continuing its investigation into the discovery of human skeletal remains which were located on Saturday, February 17, 2018 in a wooded area west of C&A Tool Engineering in the city of Auburn.

The investigation which is being conducted by Detective David Poe has indicated that between 1:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. on February 17th, the skeletal remains of a then unknown person were located by someone who was walking in the wooded area.

Due to the level of decomposition, immediate identification of the person was not possible.  An autopsy was performed on Monday, February 19, 2018 in Fort Wayne, but did not yield any additional clues for investigators to move forward with.  The remains were then sent to a forensic anthropologist in Indianapolis for further examination.

The skeletal remains have since been identified as Richard W. McComb, Jr., 59 years of age from Auburn.  Mr. McComb was reported missing to the Auburn Police Department on September 25, 2017.

At this time, investigators are still trying to determine how and why McComb came to be in the location in which his remains were located.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact either Auburn Police Detective Stacy Sexton at (260) 920-3200, extension 1922 or Indiana State Police Detective David Poe at (260) 432-8661.  Anonymous information will be accepted.

The Auburn Police Department, the DeKalb County Prosecutor’s Office, the DeKalb County Coroner’s Office and the University of Indianapolis Human Identification Center are assisting Poe with this investigation.

Press release from Indiana State Police.
