Scam Debt Collectors Spoofing Newton County Sheriff’s Office Phone Number
On Friday July 14 the Newton County Sheriff’s Office reported on their Facebook page that several Newton County residents called saying that they were getting debt collection calls from the Sheriff’s Office.
Newton County Sheriff Tom VanVleet stated that: With the assistance of computer software, these phone calls are coming from phone scammers using the Sheriff’s phone number [on caller ID’s] to make the scam look more authentic. “If we receive a court order to collect a debt, which is very rare, the Newton County Sheriff’s Office will make contact via the mail. We do not call people. If you receive a call like this, obtain as much inforamtion from the caller as possible, such as names, employee numbers, etc. DO NOT GIVE ANY OF YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION TO THE CALLER. End the call and immediately call the Sheriff’s Dispatch Center at 219-474-5661 to report the event.” Sheriff VanVleet said.
“Please remember never to give your personal information to anyone who calls you and askes for it. Reputable businesses do not operate that way.” VanVleet added.
