Rensselaer Man Arrested for smoking marijuana in his car

On 8-7-2017 at 3:23 pm Rensselaer Police received a call of a person sitting in a silver car parked in a business parking lot in the 800 block of S. College smoking marijuana. Corporal Chad Hammond stopped the vehicle matching that description on Emmet and Romaine Sts.

According to probable cause affidavits, the driver identified himself as Aricke Byrd age 26 of Rensselaer. Reports say the officer could smell the odor of burnt marijuana while speaking to the driver. The driver was asked if the police could search his vehicle. Reports say the driver reached under the seat and handed the officer an item that was used to smoke marijuana. It had burnt marijuana inside it.

Officers found paraphernalia inside his vehicle along with a baggie containing medical marijuana with 7 ounces inside it. Byrd was taken to Jasper County Detention Center and booked with charges of possession of marijuana a level 6 felony due to a prior conviction of possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia a class C misdemeanor.
