Rensselaer Man Arrested for Selling alleged Stolen Items on Social Media group

On May 10th the Rensselaer Police Department received a call of a storage locker that had been broken into and items were missing. Officer Davis spoke with the victim who advised that they were last at the locker a month prior and everything was accounted for. Later that day, the victim had learned that items matching what she had taken were being posted for sale on a local buy sell and trade site.

Officer Vanderhere and Cpl. White spoke again with the victim who advised a meeting was set up with Glenn Sommers of Rensselaer. Mr. Sommers had become a suspect in the case and was believed to be the one attempting to sell the items. When they arrived, the victim was able to locate numerous items in his possession that belong to her and another subject she is renting the storage locker with.

Mr. Sommers was placed under arrest at that time at the scene on charges of theft. Officers noticed that his red Jeep Cherokee had a large amount of property inside that was believed to be stolen. The vehicle was towed and a search warrant was obtained. During the search of the vehicle, officers located more stolen property and items related to drug use.

Both victims came to the scene to identify any items located inside the vehicle that may belong to them as well. Additional items were located including collectables that belonged to one victim’s deceased father. One item located was a folded American flag that was presented at his Father’s funeral that was presented in honor of his military service. The victim advised that during the theft from the locker his father’s remains were dumped from an urn.

After the search, an additional charge of possession of paraphernalia (B misdemeanor) and Maintaining a Common Nuisance (Level 6 felony) were added in addition to the theft (level 6 felony) that he was already being held on.
