Police Shootout in Indianapolis leaves Police Dog Missing

Indianapolis, IN. – The incident began just after 9:00 p.m. when an Indiana State Trooper noticed a male subject walking through a parking lot near 38th Street and Post Road. Troopers were in the area searching for two suspects who had fled from police earlier in the evening. The male subject matched the description of one of the suspects who had fled. After speaking with the male subject the trooper attempted to do a pat down for weapons when the subject physically pushed away and fled on foot. The trooper remotely deployed his K9 out of the back of his car and the K9 chased the male subject and made contact. The male subject then fired shots at the K9 and the Trooper. The Trooper returned fire and struck the subject. The trooper was not injured in the incident. The male subject was transported to the hospital in serious condition.

During the exchange of gunfire the police K9 ran from the area and is still loose. Several officers are in the area currently searching for the dog. It is unknown if the K9 is injured. Police are asking if the K9 is located please call 911 and do not approach it. The dog is a Belgian Malinois and has a leather harness with a 6′ leather leash attached and a yellow tag police collar.

Press release from Indiana State Police.
