Jasper County Emergency Manager Letter about Damage Assessors going around to see if County can get Federal Disaster Area relief from Flood
*** LETTER FROM THE JASPER COUNTY EMA ***
March 1, 2018 12:45 p.m. CST
This is Karen Wilson, Jasper Co. EMA Director. I am reaching out to ALL Jasper residents to supply them with information regarding the recent flooding.
The Ind. Dept. Of Homeland Security (IDHS) will be sending out Damage Assessment Teams to Jasper County beginning TOMORROW, March 2. They will be in the Rensselaer area, along the Iroquios River areas affected by the recent floods. The teams will also be going to Remington near the Carpenter Creek area. In the next few weeks, as the water recedes, they will be in Demotte areas affected by the the Kankakee River.
The purpose of the Damage Assessment Teams is to note, at ground level, what the true situation is like. Jasper Co. DOES have a DISASTER DECLARATION declared and the Governor has added Jasper Co. to the list. The opportunity exists that Jasper Co. MAY receive a Presidential Declaration and the preliminary Damage Assessments are needed as they are the initial step toward receiving the Federal/Presidential Declaration. If we receive the Presidental Declaration, then FEMA is activated to come to all the Declared Counties for additional assessments.
They will be in Rensselaer and in Remington on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday completing damage assessments. These DA teams will be wearing yellow safety vests and will have IDHS badges. These ARE LEGITIMATE individuals and this is not a SCAM.
If the residents are not home, these teams will simply be doing a walk by/walk around the houses and noting damage from the outside. If the residents are at home, it is UP To the resident to allow the teams to enter the home to provide an accurate documentation which will go to IDHS so the Governor can determine if we will be eligible for a Federal Declaration.
For the Kankakee River flooding victims, the DA Teams will be in your areas in the next week as the water recedes.
