After undergoing surgery last weekend to have three pins placed in his pitching hand, Bumgarner traveled to Arizona for doctors appointments and checkups to gauge his progress as he recovers from a fractured pinky. In his final Cactus League start this spring, Bumgarner took a line drive off his hand, displacing the fifth metacarpal and suffering a brutal injury that forced him to start the season on the disabled list. Bumgarner’s injury came a day after the Giants’ No. 3 starter, Jeff Samardzija, was diagnosed with a strained right pectoral muscle that would force him to miss at least the first half of April. Hours after Bumgarner received his initial diagnosis, he spoke in the Giants’ spring training clubhouse in Scottsdale, Arizona and said he would need to have the pins in his hand for four-to-six weeks.
