Kyle Shanahan last spring decided to bolster the 49ers’ offense through free agency and the middle rounds of the NFL draft, using the first three picks to find starters on defense. The team took Solomon Thomas third overall after trading back a spot with the Bears before using some of that haul to move back into Round 1 for Reuben Foster. They took cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon in the third. That sequence makes sense given Shanahan’s acumen for designing complex offensive schemes that put players in positions to highlight their strengths.
