Driver is Deceased after Serious Crash on I-70 in Hancock County

Hancock County, IN –  A single vehicle crash on I-70 at Mt. Comfort Road has claimed the life of the driver involved.

Just before 9:00 this morning emergency crews were called to the scene of a serious crash on I-70 at the 95.8 mile marker under the Mt. Comfort Road overpass. Upon arrival responders found a semi tractor-trailer had struck the concrete bridge support in the median of I-70. The tanker trailer being pulled by the semi broke in half spilling thousands of gallons of oil onto the roadway. The driver of the semi was ejected from the cab and found laying in the grass just ahead of the crash scene. Medics from Buck Creek Township Fire Department immediately began life saving procedures and transported the driver to the hospital. The driver later died in the hospital.

The crash is still under investigation however preliminary information leads investigators to believe the semi-tractor trailer had a tire failure causing it to run off the road, through a guardrail and strike the bridge support.

Both directions of I-70 were closed for more than three hours while Indiana Department of Environmental Management HAZMAT crews cleaned the spilled oil, and that clean-up will continue for several more hours. Every effort is being made to completely clean the scene, however due to the large amount of oil that was spilled we ask motorists to drive with caution in the area of the crash.

Investigators are still working to positively identify the driver, once identification is made and family is notified the name will be released.

One lane in each direction of I-70 is still closed while clean-up continues. Drivers should seek alternate routes for their afternoon commute.

The Indiana State Police were assisted at the scene by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, The Buck Creek Township Fire Department, INDOT, IDEM, and Garner’s Wrecker Service.

Press release from Indiana State Police.
